The photo that graces the top of the blog is from that trip, when we took a day to visit the Grand Canyon. East West Magazine Yogananda Free Christian AndFor those of you unfamiliar, Swami Yogananda was invited to the International Congress of Free Christian and Other Religious Liberals held in Boston and Plymouth in October of 1920. East West Magazine Yogananda For Free Via GoogleA selection of papers and proceedings from the Congress were published as a book entitled New Pilgrimages of the Spirit which may be read for free via Google Books. Swami Yogananda addressed the Congress as one of the speakers during the Oriental Symposium on Wednesday October 6 ( New Pilgrimages of the Spirit, 7). The book had a concise synopsis of Yoganandas address saying. In fluent English and a forcible delivery he gave an address of a philosophical character on The Science of Religion, which has been printed in pamphlet form for a wider distribution. We cannot possibly universalize particular customs and convictions, but the common element in religion can be universalized, and we can ask all alike to follow and obey it. As God is one, necessary for all, so religion is one, necessary and universal. It is only the limited human point of view that overlooks the underlying and universal element in the so-called different religions of the world. New Pilgrimages of the Spirit, 8 ). There Yogananda established an organization called Sat Sanga, and by 1923 he had also established the Sat Sanga Summer School in Waltham, just west of Boston ( Yogoda, 1). The relaxed pace with which the group travelled allowed Yogananda to see and study America and Americans, a study that certainly aided the efficacy with which he was able to package and spread his message to the American people (9). Yogananda lectured in Denver and Colorado Springs, before heading to Yellowstone. Yellowstone, Swami Yogananda considers the greatest Nature-made, man-protected Park in the world. Lakes, rivers, mountains and the hot springs, heaving, smoking, hissing, boiling everywhere. The Turquoise Springs, as blue as their name, and the Old Faithful Geyser, shooting its hot waters several feet into the air at regular intervals, have deeply enthralled me with their beauty. I am reminded of our Indian forests when I see here the wild bears, bison and deer roaming about freely. A little greedy wild bear came up to the Maxwell and put its two little front paws against the car and ate from my hands. Yogananda said of Alaska, If it were possible to hold a beauty contest of all Natures grandeurs and scenes of loveliness, it would be difficult to choose between Alaska and her Hindu sister Kashmere for the Queens throne. If regal Kashmere with her floating gardens and lotus lakes, guarded all around by snow-crowned kingly ranges of the Himalayas, is the epitome of the world, as the geographers say, then Alaska alone is worth to vie with her for beauty and diversity of scenic glory. These healing and prayer meetings became a large part of Yoganandas teachings through his leaving to go abroad in 1935. Clubs, colleges, societies, educational centers, churches and newspapers extended him every courtesy and Swamis days were filled to overflowing with engagements to speak, write and be interviewed everywhere. Then, when the free lectures began at the Philharmonic Auditorium, which seats 3,000, the whole city turned out to hear Swami speak, and thousands were turned away each night. This story rings special to me, as in the summer of 2008, I had my own cross continent roadtrip with a Swami assisting him as he taught meditation throughout the West of North America.
